Mannitol Salt Agar (Oxoid CM0085B), 500 g
A selective and differential medium for isolating and identifying pathogenic Staphylococcus, especially Staphylococcus aureus. The high salt content suppresses most other bacteria. S. aureus ferments mannitol, which turns the phenol red indicator and produces yellow colonies with yellow zones. Non-mannitol-fermenting staphylococci stay pink or red.

EMB Agar (Himedia M317-500G), 500 g
EMB (Eosin Methylene Blue) Agar is a selective and differential medium for isolating and differentiating Gram-negative enteric bacilli. The dyes eosin Y and methylene blue inhibit most Gram-positive bacteria and let lactose fermenters be told apart from non-fermenters by colony colour. Strong lactose or sucrose fermenters such as E. coli form dark colonies, often with a green metallic sheen. Non-lactose fermenters such as Salmonella and Shigella form colourless or pale colonies.
